ブエノスアイレスの喜劇役者の家に生まれ、子どもの頃から路上で行われる人形劇を見て回っていたというフアン・ペレス・エスカラ。このすばらしいカリスマ的な人形遣いが２０体の人形たちを通じて語りかけるのは、とても短く、とても小さく、しかしとても強力な物語の数々。コロナ禍中に南米で流行した「ミクロクエントス」（超短編小説）の形式を用いています。この小さな物語たちによって、現実はふたたび夢のような美しさを取り戻し、日常の憂鬱は小さく縮んでいきます。これは、人形劇だけが作りだすことのできるマジック・リアリズム。
カンパニー名“ディーゼル・モンキー”の由来
魔法のような、繊細な子どもの頃の思い出……
ブエノスアイレスの路上を、スラム街の子どもたちと一緒に駆けていました。
金持ちの子ども向けの遊園地に忍び込んだために、僕たちは警察に追いかけられていたのです。
一人の子どもが僕に言いました。
「あいつら、俺たちが貧乏だから嫌いなんだ」。
僕は答えました。「僕たちは貧乏なんかじゃない、僕たちはディーゼル・モンキーだ！」（ディーゼルは「質素だけど良いやつ」という意味の仲間内の言葉でした）。
すると子どもたちみんな、狂ったように走りながら、大声で繰り返し始めました。
「俺たちはディーゼル・モンキーだ！！！」
この狂気こそ、僕が自分のカンパニーに求めているものです。詩的で、いたずらっぽい狂気……。だって本当のところ、僕たちは遊園地を、それはめちゃくちゃにしたんですから。

Magical Realism Brought to Life Through Puppetry
Born into a family of comic actors in Buenos Aires, Juan Pérez Escala grew up watching puppetry performed in public spaces. Manipulating twenty puppets, this charismatic artist unfolds a series of stories that are extremely brief and small in scale, yet deeply powerful. The work adopts the form of microcuentos—ultra-short stories that gained popularity across South America during the pandemic. Through these minimal narratives, ordinary reality gradually regains a dreamlike beauty, and the melancholy of everyday life gently fades away. This transformation is made possible by a form of magical realism that only puppetry can create.
--The Origin of the Company Name “Diesel Monkey”
A magical memory from a sensitive childhood…
I was running through the streets of Buenos Aires with children living in the slums. One day, we were chased by the police after sneaking into an amusement park built for wealthy children.
One of the boys said to me, “They hate us because we’re poor.”
I replied, “We’re not poor. We’re Diesel Monkeys!”
(“Diesel” was a word we used among ourselves to mean “simple but great.”)
Then all the children, running wildly, began shouting it repeatedly: “We’re Diesel Monkeys!!!”
This madness is exactly what I want for my puppetry company—a poetic, mischievous kind of madness… After all, we completely wrecked that amusement park.
